Looking for some assistance with a nature problem

My name is Arthur and I am part of the forest preservation team. Basically we go around and make sure the forests around populated areas are kept clean, put out campfires that are unattended, stop unregistered tree cutting, that sort of thing.

Well the other day My team and I came to a spot near your town where we thought there was an unattended camp site. It was very strange, the area was cleared out like a camp site but there were no fires or trace of one, and it smelled awful but there were no dead animals, in fact there were no animals at all. When I say no animals I mean no birds, no insects, nothing. Even the trees were still, no wind to speak of or even a breeze. The silence felt like you were going deaf.

We left but marked the areas location, I would like to come to town to see if anyone would be willing to help investigate, while the forest is my job there are just some things I don't know about. Post a message if you are interested.
